Why two schools a mile apart differ by thousands
The price difference between a parish school and an independent academy is mostly a difference in who else is paying. A parish school is subsidized by its parish, so the tuition a family sees is not the full cost of educating the child. An independent academy has no parish behind it, so tuition carries closer to the whole bill.

The fees that are not tuition. These are real money and they rarely appear in the headline figure. Area schools commonly add new-family fees, activity fees and technology fees, which together run from about $150 to $875 a year depending on the school and the grade. Athletic fees at schools with large sports programs add $110 to $425 on top. Saints Peter and Paul charges a $150 registration deposit per student and does not layer activity or technology fees on it.
When you pay. Paying the year in full usually earns a discount, typically a flat amount or around 5 percent. Saints Peter and Paul takes $100 off for payment in full before its August deadline. - The BISON Children’s Scholarship Fund serves low-income families across the region, and the award follows the child to any participating school. Its average award is $1,480 and the maximum is $2,500, and it currently supports more than 1,940 scholars across 81 schools.
- School-run aid. Most schools hold their own need-based fund and award from it every year. Saints Peter and Paul runs the Angel Fund Scholarship, reviewed by a committee on financial need and commitment to Catholic values.
