We are beginning our first essay. This weekend you are to write a draft of your introduction. See essay topics handed out in class. Review the Writing an Introduction handout and follow the steps to writing an introduction. We will review and edit the drafts in class on Monday. Below is a sample introduction.
War inevitably leads to loss (HOOK). In the novel The Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva experiences several losses as a result of the Sudanese civil war, yet these devastating losses strengthen his character (THESIS STATEMENT). First Salva loses his immediate family, then he loses his uncle. These losses initially cause Salva sadness, but he eventually finds strength in the memories of his loved ones (DEVELOPMENT OF THESIS)
